'Hawaii Five-O' Surfing to the Big Screen

Warner Bros. Pictures will co-produce a long-awaited feature film based on the "Hawaii Five-O" (search) television series, a newspaper reported Thursday.

A studio official confirmed Wednesday that the studio will co-produce a film based on the hit CBS series that aired from 1968-1980 with George Litto Productions, which owns the rights to the title, the Honolulu Star-Bulletin reported.

The film is tentatively titled "Hawaii Five-O the Movie," the newspaper said.

Litto's daughter, Andria Litto, will be executive producer, and screenwriter George Nolfi ("Oceans Twelve") will write the story, the newspaper said.

The choice of who to play lead character Steve McGarrett (search) and who to direct will not be made until the script is completed and approved.

If all that occurs this fall, then the 80-day filming in Hawaii could begin late next spring for a summer 2006 release, said Litto, an agent for the series later creator, Leonard Freeman.

"We are in discussions with a major director and have been in negotiations for some time with a major star, which will be ongoing until the script is finished," Litto said.
