Two people were killed in a shooting in a parking lot near the stadium where North Carolina State University (search) opened its football season, Wake County Sheriff Donnie Harrison said.

One victim was dead at the scene and the other died at a hospital, Harrison said. Neither were N.C. State students. Both men were in their 20s, he said.

Deputies had collected descriptions of two male suspects, but declined to release any details. They were called to the scene of the shooting about 6 p.m., the same time as N.C. State kicked off against Richmond (search), Harrison said.

He said he suspected alcohol consumption contributed to the motive behind the shooting.

A spokeswoman for the school's athletic department referred questions to the sheriff's department.
