A U.S. soldier was killed during fighting in Najaf (search), the military said Friday.

The soldier, from a special forces unit, was killed during a raid on Thursday on a school in the holy city of Najaf, where militia loyal to radical Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr (search) have been fighting U.S. and Iraqi forces for over a week.

Troops raided the school, a nearby maternity hospital, and al-Sadr's house in efforts to rout out the militia, dropping a 500-pound bomb on one of the buildings, the military said.
