CINCINNATI – The mayor who saw this city through its worst race riots in decades says he has lost his enthusiasm for politics and will not run for re-election next year.
"A campaign just wasn't in my gut anymore," Mayor Charlie Luken (search), a Democrat, said Monday.
The former television news anchorman and one-term congressman said he has no plans for when he leaves office.
Luken noted that Cincinnati is still trying to overcome the negative publicity it got during the riots in April 2001 following the shooting of an unarmed black man.
"The city has made a lot of progress," Luken said. "But people here have got to stop being negative about the city."
