"The Other Man" Michael Bergin (search) was busted for drunken driving in Los Angeles on Friday — the fifth anniversary of the plane crash that caused the untimely death of his former lover Carolyn Bessette (search) and her husband, John Kennedy Jr. (search)

The 35-year-old Bergin, who recently penned a controversial tell-all book about his torrid love affair with Bessette Kennedy, was allegedly drunk behind the wheel of his 2001 GMC Yukon when he slammed into an in-line skater crossing a West Hollywood street on Friday night, according to Sgt. Bob Minutello of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office West Hollywood Station.

Bergin was looking to beat oncoming traffic as he tried to make a left turn and did not see the skater, who was cruising with a group of Rollerbladers.

The woman, identified by The Smoking Gun's Web site as competitive in-line skater Jenni Armstrong, flew up onto the hood of his SUV, Minutello told The New York Post. Minutello added that numerous witnesses told cops the actor was uncooperative and refused a sobriety test before being handcuffed and put into a police car. He was charged with felony drunken driving.

He then spent 11 hours in an L.A. jail until he was sprung on $50,000 bail.

Armstrong, 39, broke her tibia and suffered head trauma in the smash-up as she cruised around with a recreational skating group. She was said to have had surgery on her knee, according to the site.

Bergin may have been boozing to dull the anguish of the tragic death of Bessette, who died with her husband and her sister, Lauren Bessette, (search) as they winged their way to Martha's Vineyard (search) for a family wedding at the Kennedy compound on Hyannis Port, Mass., on July 16, 1999.

The three were found five days later, still strapped in their seats inside the small Piper Saratoga plane that Kennedy piloted.

The investigation into the crash found that Kennedy had become disoriented during the flight, which led to the plane's fatal tailspin.

In his recently published bestseller, "The Other Man: A Love Story," (search) Bergin spilled the beans about his role in the love triangle between him and the married couple.
