A small airplane crashed into two homes Wednesday, clipping the roof of one home before plowing into the other. The pilot was killed.

Both homes caught fire, but the blazes were put out quickly. The residents were not seriously hurt, said Garry Layman of the Orange County Fire Authority (search).

It was not clear if other people were on board the plane.

Air traffic controllers lost contact with the single-engine plane just before it crashed, FAA (search) spokesman Donn Walker said. It had been flying from Torrance to Chino.

The plane was built from a kit and registered with the FAA last year.

The residential area where the plane crashed is about 25 miles south of downtown Los Angeles.
