The election is going to be about one thing with two names, and that two-headed monster is Iraq and George W. Bush.

What we know for a fact is that the president has not wavered on his opinion that Saddam Hussein (search) had to go, and that we had to invade.

What we also know for a fact is that the American people are slowing changing their mind on that question.

At the time of the war, 70 percent agreed with Bush. Now it's down in the high 40s and falling.

So the question becomes... Is America turning into a Spain? Are Americans turning into Spaniards?

I don't have to remind you that the Spaniards ran like mice when Al Qaeda (search) blew up some bombs in Madrid. They threw their pro-war prime minister out in favor of the anti-war, bring-the-troops-home socialists.

So we know Spaniards cave like a cheap tent.

Yes, Americans are unhappy with the way the occupation of Iraq is going. Who could like it, but does that mean they fold?

I don't think so. I think it means Americans will think about this stuff long and hard and decide what to do. But whatever choice they make — Bush or Kerry — they both say we're staying to finish the job.

So are Americans like Spaniards? I think the answer is no.

That's My Word.
