Attackers
March 11: Fourteen of the 18 people charged in the Madrid bombing are Moroccan. Alleged attack mastermind Sarhane Ben Abdelmajid Fakhe was killed, along with four others, in an explosion during a raid by Spanish police upon a Madrid apartment on April 3, 2004. Groups claiming affiliation with Al Qaeda took responsibility for the attack.
Sept. 11: Nineteen men hijacked the four planes, working in teams of five, except for Flight 93, which was commandeered by four men. All died during the attacks. Fifteen of the 19 were Saudi citizens, but the apparent leader, Mohamed Atta, was Egyptian. Al Qaeda leaders Usama bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahiri months later took responsibility for the attacks.
Common Connection
Moroccan fugitive Amer Azizi was indicted Wednesday by a Spanish court, which accuses him of helping organize a meeting in northeastern Spain in July 2001 of key plotters in the Sept. 11 attacks, including Atta. Azizi is believed to have been involved in planning both attacks.
