NEW YORK – Chevy Chase and Kim Basinger get charitable and Janet's sagging career revealed in today's Foxlight.

Chevy Chase (search) is auctioning off items donated by his famous friends to raise funds for an environmental education Web site. The online auction at charityfolks.com starts Thursday and continues through May 6. Backstage passes and tickets to a David Bowie concert, a two-week internship at Rolling Stone magazine and lunch with former President Clinton and Chase, a former "Saturday Night Live" star, are among the top items up for bid. They hope to raise at least $250,000.

"One of the fortuitous things about this is that I'm a movie star," Chase told The Associated Press Tuesday. "And I have a lot of friends who are rock stars and movie stars, so I wrote to them personally and told them about the auction and asked for their help."

I hope he didn't mention the part about being a movie star. They're probably still laughing. Chase needs a Quentin Tarantino-style makeover.

Speaking of crazy celebrity auctions, Kim Basinger (search) on Tuesday sold her 3.7-carat diamond engagement ring from ex-husband Alec Baldwin for $59,750 to a Beverly Hills jewelry dealer, who predicted a fan would "pay crazy money for that."

The actress, a noted animal rights activist, auctioned the modern Tiffany & Co. ring and some other jewelry at Christie's to raise money for The Performing Animal Welfare Society.

Finally, speaking of charity, not enough people are making a donation to Janet Jackson (search). Her new album plummeted in the second week of release. Call it a career malfunction.
