The city does not plan to shut down Penn Station during the Republican National Convention (search), but it "wouldn't be the world's worst thing" if the terminal were closed for a few hours, Mayor Michael Bloomberg (search) said.
"The Secret Service has not asked us to close Penn Station and at this point in time we don't have any plans to do so," Bloomberg said Thursday. "If the Secret Service (search) feels that it's necessary, we'll certainly talk to them."
The Secret Service, which is handling security for political conventions, ordered closed two of Boston's major transportation hubs, North Station and Interstate 93, for the Democratic National Convention in July.
On Thursday, Bloomberg did not rule out the possibility that Penn Station could be closed for a few hours but said it was unlikely it would be closed for days.
"If the president is giving a speech one night ... we'll live with that," he said.
The New York Police Department began giving officers special anti-terror training for the convention, which will be held at Madison Square Garden from Aug. 30 to Sept. 2.
