Front-runner John Kerry (search) maintains a commanding lead over rival John Edwards (search) among likely voters in Democratic primaries in California, New York and Ohio next week, according to statewide polls released Wednesday.
Edwards is more competitive in Georgia, where Kerry held an 8-percentage point lead over the North Carolina senator.
Those four states are among the 10 that will hold contests on March 2, with a total of 1,151 delegates at stake.
Kerry, a four-term Massachusetts senator and winner of 18 of 20 contests, had 60 percent support to Edwards' 21 percent in the New York survey by the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. In California, he led Edwards, 60 percent to 19 percent, according to a Field Poll.
In Ohio, a state where the two Democrats have campaigned heavily, Kerry led Edwards, 47 percent to 26 percent. The margin was smaller in Georgia, where Kerry led the Southern-born Edwards 45 percent to 37 percent, according to American Research Group polls.
Al Sharpton (search) and Rep. Dennis Kucinich (search) of Ohio were in single digits in the state polls, except in Ohio where Kucinich had 11 percent.
Quinnipiac's telephone poll of 581 likely New York voters was conducted Wednesday through Monday and had a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points. The Field Poll of 497 likely California voters was conducted Wednesday through Sunday and had a margin of error of plus or minus 4.5 percentage points.
The ARG polls of 600 likely voters in Georgia and Ohio were conducted early this week and had margins of sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
