Joe Namath (search) is undergoing alcohol-abuse counseling after appearing soused during a TV interview and telling a reporter he wanted to kiss her and "couldn't care less" about the Jets.

"Well, I've enrolled, or I've gone into a center, and I'm getting personal help there," the Jets Hall of Fame quarterback told ESPN in an interview to be aired Sunday.

In a halftime interview during a Jet-Patriot game in December, ESPN reporter Suzy Kolber (search) asked Namath what it meant to watch the Jets struggle this season.

"I want to kiss you. I couldn't care less about the team struggling," Namath replied, his speech slurred. In his latest comments, Namath said he had been drinking for several hours before kickoff.

"We had been going since 3 or 4 in the afternoon, and I did the wrong thing," he said. "I'm very disappointed with my behavior because of how I've embarrassed my family and the people that I work with and my friends and all."

The interview with Kolber "was the wake-up call," he said. "Even before that, I said, 'Yeah, I'm going to stop, I'm going to stop.' It's just something I cannot handle, and it's history."
