The Bush administration says the Medicare prescription drug bill would relieve states of some of the financial burden of paying for drug coverage for low-income seniors. Following is a list of the current number of Medicare beneficiaries, state by state. The second column is the number of lower-income older and disabled residents who are eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid, and whose drug costs are currently paid by the states under Medicaid. The third column is the amount the Bush administration projects each state would save over eight years if the dual eligibles received drug coverage under the federal Medicare program.
