School Bars Coaches as Part of Hazing Scandal

Five football coaches have been barred from the Mepham High School (search) athletic program next year because of a hazing scandal.

The district school board, in its decision Wednesday night, also said the coaches' contracts would not be renewed. The board did not say whether the coaches would be removed from their teaching posts.

Three varsity football players are accused of sodomizing three freshmen teammates at a preseason training camp in August in Pennsylvania. They were later charged.

Norbert Billig, a school board member, said it was in the "best interests of our students and the success of our program that the present coaches not be reappointed."

One of the coaches, Kevin McElroy (search), said the board's decision was made without due process and was "100 percent unjust."

The alleged victims have filed legal notices that they intend to sue their assailants, school officials and the school district.
