National Public Radio (search) has been bequeathed a gift of $200 million by the late Joan Kroc. Who's that you say? She is the widow of Ray Kroc, the founder of McDonald's the fast food empire.
Now, I did a google search on NPR and fast food and I repeat: Talk about biting the hand that feeds you.
I got a quick 800 hits of mostly NPR transcripts bitching and moaning about fast food and how you can combat such a pernicious evil in your life. One really stood out – “Fast Food on Trial” – which equates McDonald's with big tobacco.
It makes you wonder if Joan Kroc heard that one before she died.
I remember pitcher Goose Gossage when he played for the San Diego Padres, which Joan Kroc owned and personally ran. She got hooked up with Mothers Against Drunk Drivers and issued an order: No beer in the clubhouse. An annoyed Gossage said “She's poisoning the planet with her burgers and I can't have a beer.”
I think he got traded. But probably not for that, right?
And, by the way, NPR has spent quite a bit of time whacking McDonald's on PETA issues -- how McDonald's treats those little burgers when they're still on the hoof, if you know what I mean.
Do you think this will teach NPR that they ought to be nicer about some things they don't agree with, like burgers and fries and eating cows? Nope. They'll just say, hey we got $200 million making that old lady feel guilty. Who else has a few billion and is getting old?
That's My Word.
