Leno Boosted by Must-See Arnie

Arnold Schwarzenegger (search) pumped up the ratings for Jay Leno's "Tonight Show" (search) to almost twice the audience the late-night program usually gets.

Roughly 8 million to 9 million people tuned in to Wednesday night's "Tonight Show," on which Arnie announced his bid for the California governor's seat in October's recall election.

The last time that many tuned in to "Tonight" was last spring, when Katie Couric hosted the show in a sweeps stunt.

About 14 percent of New York's TVs were tuned to "Tonight" on Wednesday.

The latest figures are an estimate based on Nielsen's overnight ratings, recorded in only some areas of the United States.
