There continues to be a "very real potential" for an attack by Usama bin Laden's Al Qaeda (search) terror network, Attorney General John Ashcroft said, responding to the latest threats by a man claiming to be a high-ranking Al Qaeda operative.
"I believe that Al Qaeda wants to strike us whenever and wherever they can," Ashcroft said, while appearing on "Fox News Sunday." "I believe we've disrupted dozens and dozens and dozens —- over 100 terrorist-related attacks —- around the world since 9/11.
"And it's not just individuals who might transit the country," he added. "We're always conscious of the potential presence and activity of individuals who might hurt us from within the country."
Ashcroft's words came on the heels of another audiotape that was released on Sunday in which a man claiming to be Usama bin Laden's right-hand man warned Americans that any harm inflicted on detainees at Guantanamo Bay would come at a high cost.
Terror threat: real or ranting?
A sample of your responses:
It's real. Look at what is happening to our military in Iraq. Look what has happened in the past few months in the Middle East with buildings being blown up.

We have to take threats as real until we can prove otherwise. We had clues before 9-11 that were probably discounted as rants - and look what happened.

We must proceed as if the threats are real. Our government will never be able to verify all the potential threats. So, it is now necessary to accept that we have some vulnerability, and must do all we can to never allow another 9/11. Soft targets for terrorists will always exist, but our antenna is up - bigger and better than ever.

The terror threat is real! As long as countries like Iran, North Korea, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Sudan go unchecked we will continue to be under threat of terror in the United States and around the world.

Let us try to keep the problem in perspective. The Soviets said they may be missing some nuclear weapons. That is about as real as a threat can get. The imagined part of the threat becomes apparent when one considers what may have gone missing after the breakup of the former Soviet Union.

WTC came down. Terror is always a threat. From small to big. 1 dead is the same as 1000.
