Potter Bargains Pop Up Like Magic

The cover price for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix may be $29.99, but stores across the nation are putting the books on sale almost immediately -- and that means Potter bargain buyers have a lot of hunting to do.

Discounts and special offers range from 20 percent to nearly 50 percent off the cover price.

Barnes & Noble (search) is selling them for $17.99.

Books of Wonder in New York City is selling them for the full $29.99 -- but offering a discount for the full series of five at $89.95.

"The discount is not hurting us at all. In fact, we've almost sold out our first shipment," said assistant store manager Patty Ocfamia.

Not surprisingly, Scholastic Books -- Harry Potter's publisher -- is selling the book at its cover price.

"We wouldn't try to undercut any of our customers," said Scholastic Books manager Larry Litman.

Online retailers such as Amazon.com are competing against bookstore chains by selling the book for $17.99.

So, what's the cheapest Harry Potter out there? The best price The Post found that Costco had it on the racks for $15.99.
