Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld (search) said Sunday the United States will have to rely on low-ranking Iraqi officials from Saddam Hussein's government to disclose the existence of banned weapons.

He said there is little chance that the weapons -- whose alleged existence provided the main basis for war -- will be found independently, or that top officials will provide useful information.

"I never believed that we'd just tumble over weapons of mass destruction in that country," Rumsfeld told Fox News Sunday, echoing President Bush's comments Saturday.

"I'm not frustrated at all," Rumsfeld said later in another televised interview.

Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction: Do we need to find them?

A sample of your responses:

What are they talking about - are there WMDs in Iraq???  We KNOW they exist, because Saddam used them on his own people!.  We have all the proof we need.  We need nothing further.
That said, the only other reason to find any that still remain in country is to get to anything that might still exist before any terrorist/Saddam cronies (one and the same) do, to use them on coalition troops and Iraq citizens.

I think we do because I don't want to have the French or any other nation that was against this war, to thumb their nose at ours and say "I told you so." We did liberate Iraq and that is all good, but we need to complete our primary objective too.

I do not feel that it is as important to find WMD as it is to find physical proof that Sadam and his sons have been terminated, and if no proof exists, initiate some type of covert operation by one of our agencies to find and terminate them and each of them, retaining physical proof of each one.

We shouldn't let the weapons of mass destruction issue blur our vision. Since 9/11 the United States has been involved in a war against terrorism.  WMD, human rights issues, breaches in the Geneva Convention aside, the PLO Terrorist training camp found in Iraq is justification enough for this war!

I don't personally care if we ever find the WMD.  I'm sure they did exist.  I am thankful for a President who drew a line in the sand and stuck with it.  Had the other party won the election and 9-11 happened I think we would still be making threats and not backing them up.  President Bush makes me proud to be an American.  Love your show.  Keep up the excellent work.

We need to keep looking for WMDs in Iraq... if  for no other reason than keeping them out of the hands of any radicals who would covet them.

No we do not need to find WMD. We have disposed of one of the worst human / creatures that was ever put of the face of this beautiful earth. I did not vote for George Bush in the last election, but i sure will in the next one. just look at all the bodies that have been found and that will surpass the WMD.
