U.S. ground troops, backed by warplanes and helicopters, poured into the center of Saddam Hussein's hometown Monday and seized the Iraqi dictator's presidential palace without a fight.

Soldiers fought pockets of hard-core defenders in a bid to crush the last major stronghold of resistance.

"There was less resistance than we anticipated," said Brig. Gen. Vincent Brooks, U.S. Central Command spokesman, noting that Tikrit's defenders had been subjected to punishing airstrikes over the past several days.
