NEW YORK – Rickey Smith, the 23-year-old from Keene, Texas, became the fifth person booted off American Idol 2 Wednesday night.
America had decided, after Tuesday night's live show, that Smith just didn't cut the mustard, and voted to eliminate him.
Kimberly Caldwell and Kimberley Locke would have been eliminated last week, except they were spared because producers instead booted Corey Clark for allegedly beating his kid sister.
And this week, they earned more votes than Smith, who didn't even get to give the traditional farewell speech (the time element seemed to be a factor).
With Smith gone, the remaining contestants are Carmen Rasmusen, Clay Aiken, Joshua Gracin (a U.S. Marine), fan favorite Ruben Studdard, Trenyce, Caldwell and Locke.
Last night's show was highlighted by an appearance from the first American Idol winner, Kelly Clarkson, who sang a song from her new album, "Thankful," which hits stores April 15.
The show also featured a clip from the upcoming American Idol movie, From Justin to Kelly, which is scheduled for a June release. The movie co-stars American Idol runner-up Justin Guarini.
