Will Tobey Be Able to 'Swing' Another Spider-Man?

Tobey Maguire, who is due to start filming the sequel to last year's mega-grossing Spider-Man next month, is suffering from back pain.

Rumors were swirling in Hollywood yesterday that Moonlight Mile's Jake Gyllenhaal, who is currently dating Spider-Man's Kirsten Dunst, was poised to step into the Spidey tights if Maguire was unfit to film The Amazing Spider-Man.

But Maguire's rep Kelly Bush told The Post there had been no discussions about replacing her client, who has just finished shooting the horse-racing drama Seabiscuit, in which he plays jockey Red Pollard.

There were no plans to postpone the Spider-Man start date, she added.

"After doing two physically demanding films in a row, Tobey has experienced mild discomfort in his back, which is in the final stages of healing," she said in a statement.

"With an April 12 start date around the corner, everyone involved wants to be certain he is able to do the intense stunts."

Maguire, who has just renegotiated a $17 million paycheck, is said to believe he's physically up to the task of again tackling the role of Peter Parker and his web-slinging alter ego.
