NEW YORK – Ex-Golden Girls star Rue McClanahan is being hauled into court by her ex-lover on fraud charges.
Director Dirk Summers, 71, is threatening to introduce sensational evidence in the trial -- including X-rated love letters and other steamy items.
Summers is suing McClanahan for $50 million, claiming the 68-year-old actress reneged on their plans to open a luxury spa together near San Diego because he refused to marry her.
McClanahan, on the other hand, alleges Summers took $200,000 from her -- and never paid it back.
McClanahan's trial is set to begin in San Diego Superior Court on Feb. 21 -- her 69th birthday.
"Rue categorically denies the charges," said McClanahan's attorney, John Edwards. "[Summers] is suing her for not living up to the promise of helping to fund and finance the project -- when in fact he took $200,000 of her money."
Summers claims he and McClanahan -- who he says were "involved in an intimate, romantic relationship for over 16 years" -- began raising money for the planned $50 million Elan Vital spa in the mid-'90s, sending out hundreds of letters soliciting investors under their partnership agreement.
Summers says he snagged financial backing from a major hotel corporation in June 1997 -- and, just days later, McClanahan demanded he marry her, saying: "If we don't get married this time, you are really going to regret it," according to court papers filed by Summers.
When he refused, McClanahan denied having anything to do with the spa -- thereby sinking the project, according to Summers.
McClanahan married her sixth husband, actor Morrow Wilson, in 1997.
