Le Carre Blows His Top

John le Carre, the famous novelist, takes after George W. Bush today in the Times of London.

It is not an attack meant for you, or me to see. Frankly, he thinks we are too thick to understand the great things he has to say about America's current effort to defend itself from people like Saddam Hussein.

Le Carre makes the snotty point often made by Brits and others in Europe that Bush is only going after Saddam because Saddam, "tried to kill my daddy."

He characterizes Bush as a cowboy, of course. That would be as obvious as me characterizing snooty Brits as twits.

He wrings his hands about the poor Iraqis who will be killed. Those would be the ones that Saddam crowds into a bomb shelter that doubles as a command center for Iraqi generals the likeliest of targets.

And in summing up, he says this:

"What is at stake is America's need to demonstrate its military power to all of us -- to Europe and Russia and China and poor mad little North Korea, as well as the middle east; to show who rules America at home, and who is to be ruled by America abroad."

Maybe he would have preferred the Soviet Union emerged as the superpower now flexing its muscles worldwide?

Suffice it to say he doesn't understand why bush needs to go after Saddam. And we are left to conclude he thinks it better that Saddam is left alone, gets nukes like North Korea, then runs the world's oil supply, and therefore, the world economy.

There may be a lot of people unhappy George W. Bush is president. But better him than John le Carre.
