NEW YORK – Former Suddenly Susan star Brooke Shields is suddenly pregnant.
The beauty revealed she and hunky writer hubby Chris Henchy are expecting their first child in early May -- after desperately trying for months to conceive.
"Getting pregnant was not easy," Shields told The New York Post. "Chris and I had been hoping for a while, just waiting and wondering and trying."
Now that she's expecting, "there is no preference for a boy or girl, we just want a healthy baby," said Shields, 37, who added she and Chris are choosing not to learn the child's sex before the birth.
Shields -- who just finished filming Rent a Husband with Il Postino star Maria Grazia Cucinotta -- said she plans to take time off from her grueling work schedule to prepare for the baby's arrival, including looking for a New York pad.
Still looking trim, she said she keeps in shape by doing yoga and walking each day -- while still eating what she wants.
Encouraging words from her adoring hubby don't hurt, either.
"Chris tells me every day how beautiful I am. He doesn't pay attention . . . to my bulging stomach," Shields giggled.
The news couldn't have come at a better time for the star: Her beloved dad is battling prostate cancer.
"But he's doing well," Shields said. "He can't wait to welcome the new baby."
Shields was previously married to tennis star Andre Agassi.
Agassi and wife Steffi Graf had their first child, a boy, in October 2001.
