Stories for Wednesday,
Dec. 11:

The White House is warning the world that it's not ruling out nuclear retaliation to any attack using weapons of mass destruction
• Retired Army Lt. Col. Andrew Krepinevich, executive director of the Center of Strategic and Budgetary Assessments

The "new" comments that put Sen. Trent Lott, R-Miss., in hot water may not be so new after all. A new report says that in 1980, then-congressman Lott followed a fiery speech by Sen. Strom Thurmond, R-S.C., with a statement almost identical to the one he made last week: "If we had elected this man 30 years ago, we wouldn't be in the mess we are today." Thurmond ran on a segregationist platform. Is that what Lott was referring to?
• Rep. Mike Pence, R-Ind.
• Rep. Carolyn Kilpatrick, D-Mich.
