NEW YORK – Paramount has quietly been developing a spin-off of its long-running magazine show, Entertainment Tonight.
The new show, tentatively titled Insider, could launch as early as next year, according to sources close to the project.
Based on Entertainment Tonight's gossipy Insider segment, the new show will be more in depth than Entertainment Tonight and possibly more gossip oriented.
The new show would likely air in the evenings right after Entertainment Tonight, replacing Hollywood Squares on CBS stations, according to the industry trade magazine, Broadcasting and Cable.
Earlier this year the CBS stations wanted to ditch Squares for the new Entertainment Tonight, but brass at Viacom, the parent company of Paramount, King World and CBS was able to quiet the dispute.
Industry experts say ET is relatively cheaper to produce than Hollywood Squares and is the top-rated syndicated magazine show on TV.
The show has also been undergoing an expansion of sorts, with a younger skewing version of the show already airing on Viacom-owned MTV, called ET on MTV.
Earlier this year the new cable version of Entertainment Tonight was renewed for a full season.
