NEW YORK – Liza Minnelli and hubby David Gest have blamed a 29-year-old VH1 producer named Rob Weiss for destroying their reality show, Liza & David, before it even started.
Weiss, who had a blowout with Gest the night VH1 was filming a dinner party at Minnelli's uptown apartment, was fingered by the couple Wednesday night on Larry King Live.
Weiss was one of two executive producers VH1 put on the project.
The fight, which exploded in front of about 70 guests, occurred toward the end of the night when Minnelli was performing songs with a few of the guests, including Ray Charles and '70s soul singers Ashford & Simpson.
According to Gest, Weiss insisted that Minnelli perform with hip young VH1 stars Kelly Rowland and Michelle Branch, and when Gest refused Weiss yelled at him.
"He said, 'Our audience is these two and if you don't bring them up, your show is canceled," Gest told King. "The next day he called and said, 'I have news for you, your show is canceled."
Gest also accused Weiss of hitting him in the arm, not turning off his cell phone while Liza was singing and insulting "an America legend," Ray Charles.
"I think what bothered me the most is they insulted my husband and they insulted our integrity," Minnelli told King.
VH1 officials said they canceled the show because the network was not given the kind of access and cooperation needed to make the show work.
A VH1 spokeswoman told The Post yesterday: "We've said all that we're going to say."
