BAGRAM, Afghanistan – Two U.S. Special Operations soldiers were wounded while on an intelligence gathering operation in central Afghanistan, a military spokesman said Monday.
One soldier was shot in the calf, the other in the upper thigh in the attack early Sunday in Uruzgan province, said Col. Roger King at Bagram air base, the U.S. military headquarters in Afghanistan.
In conjunction with the operation, the coalition captured four men for questioning. King did not identify the men. The soldiers were treated in Bagram until their conditions were stable and were to be flown to Germany.
U.S. Special Operations are based at Fort Bragg, N.C.
A U.S. air raid in Uruzgan on July 1 killed at least 46 civilians and wounded 117, according to Afghan authorities, who said many of them celebrating at a wedding party.
Results of investigations by the United States and a separate U.N. fact-finding group have not yet been released.
It was not known whether the special operations troops were wounded near the scene of the air raid or whether the two incidents were linked.
The names of the wounded soldiers were withheld pending notification of their families. King said he did not have any information about who shot them.
