WASHINGTON – Key staffers are denying that GOP Conference Chairman J.C. Watts, the highest-ranking African-American on Capitol Hill, is mulling a possible retirement.
"J.C. Watts is running for re-election," a Watts aide told Fox News on Thursday.
Watts, R-Okla., has said little to either kill or lend credence to the rumors.
One of the factors that could affect his decision: the Oklahoma Supreme Court is hearing arguments Thursday regarding redistricting. The Democratic-led state Legislature wants to add three new counties into Watts' conservative 4th Congressional District.
The filing deadline to run again isn't until July 10. Watts, who keeps decisions close to the vest, is unlikely to say anything before then.
