The Mothman Prophecies, L.I.E. and The Hustler are in the Foxlight.
Some critics called The Mothman Prophecies a lot of hooey, but I thought it was one of the best movies Richard Gere has done in a long time. Plus, what's not to like about the Laura Linney? Now with the DVD's great sound we may be able to make out some of those phone calls. I don't care if it is or isn't true — it's creepy.
However, it's not as creepy as L.I.E., a film about a child molester. Brian Cox has played creepy guys before — he was the original Hannibal Lector, in 1984's Manhunter. Now he's hunting boys. Despite the queasy subject matter, some critics praised this thing. Me? I didn't see it — and I'm not going to.
One movie I have seen lots of times, and would gladly revisit, is Paul Newman's The Hustler. Newman takes on a Minnesota Fats that was perfectly portrayed by Jackie Gleason. And, look who Paul's agent is — Patton. George C. Scott is the guy who hustles the Hustler. This is great filmmaking.
