FRED BARNES, CO-HOST: Welcome back to The Beltway Boys.

Mort's on the griddle, and here's our Tip Sheet for next week's action.

Item number one, President Bush travels to Los Angeles and San Jose to stump for California gubernatorial candidate Bill Simon, who's a Republican.

MORT KONDRACKE, CO-HOST: Bush has spent a lot of time in, in California, but this year you're going to have a regular shuttle trip. It's going to be Washington, South Dakota...

BARNES: Yes.

KONDRACKE: ... California, Texas, Washington, South Dakota, buh-buh- buh-buh.

BARNES: Right.

KONDRACKE: That's the, that's the routine.

BARNES: Yes, Simon needs money, because Gray Davis is loaded, and, and, and Bush can raise him some.

Item two, look for the House to approve President Bush's proposal to build a nuclear waste site at Nevada's Yucca Mountain.

KONDRACKE: And nothing could be more on time.

BARNES: Right.

KONDRACKE: I mean, or late, actually.

BARNES: Yes.

KONDRACKE: We've been studying this for years. Yucca Mountain's the place. There are hundreds of waste nuclear sites around the country, and they're all leaking and getting dangerous.

BARNES: Mort, but don't you think it's appalling that Democrats have turned this into a political issue? I mean, they're against it.

KONDRACKE: It's about Harry Reed (ph).

BARNES: OK, well, he's the senator from Nevada.

KONDRACKE: Right.

BARNES: Item three, the Senate will begin consideration of a major component of President Bush's economic plan, trade promotion authority.

KONDRACKE: Well, Tom Daschle wants trade adjustment assistance for displaced workers.

BARNES: Yes.

KONDRACKE: Now, when Bush, Bush sold the, the trade promotion authority in the, in the House and (UNINTELLIGIBLE) — to the textile industry, then it gave him...

BARNES: Yes, right.

KONDRACKE: ... to the steel industry, he can give some help to workers too.

BARNES: Yes, so it'll pass. All right.

Item four, President Bush could endorse the idea of, quote unquote, "mental health parity" at an event in New Mexico Monday.

KONDRACKE: New Mexico, because that's where Senator...

BARNES: Right.

KONDRACKE: ... Pete Domenici comes from...

BARNES: Yes.

KONDRACKE: ... and he's been a great advocate...

BARNES: Right.

KONDRACKE: ... for this, and this is — this too is about time.

BARNES: It's going to cost a lot, but it was inevitable.

And item five, this Sunday, the 28th, is Saddam Hussein, and coincidentally, Mort's birthday. And before — wait a minute, Mort, before you say anything, myself and the research staff of The Beltway Boys has done a study of the personality traits of those...

KONDRACKE: Uh-oh.

BARNES: ... born under the sign of Taurus, as both you and Saddam are. And we want to check you two out and see how you compare.

So let's start with trait number one, patient. And there, Mort, you do very well. Saddam, no.

Secondly, loving. Mort, you're a loving character. Saddam, nyet.

Persistent, well, here, you know, you and Saddam are a bit alike, Mort. You both get a checkmark for being persistent.

Inflexible...

KONDRACKE: That you cannot say about me.

BARNES: But you can say it about Saddam for sure.

And greedy...

KONDRACKE: (UNINTELLIGIBLE)

BARNES: ... I don't know, I, I, I — but we only gave one to Saddam Hussein. So what do you say for yourself?

KONDRACKE: I, I say, so much for astrology. And let's — and also, I hope this is Saddam's last birthday.

BARNES: I do too.
