President Pervez Musharraf of Pakistan is supposed to be our friend. If that is true, the man who is suspected of cutting Daniel Pearl's throat will be on a plane to America tomorrow.
If it is not, there will be dithering and Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh may get another chance at escaping justice, as he has so many times before.
This is getting to be an old story with this guy. We wanted Sheikh after a 1994 case involving the kidnapping of Americans. He promised those hostages that he would slit their throats and cut their heads off, and he may well have been the one who did precisely that to Pearl. At the very least, he was involved in his kidnapping. He says he was, so that's that.
But Sheikh has slid around the Pakistani justice system with the help of the Taliban-leaning Pakistani security services for a long time now. We've been asking for the guy for months now. If Musharraf had handed him over, there's a chance Pearl would still be alive.
So this is a clear issue on a clear day to make a clear decision. Either Musharraf orders Sheikh onto a plane to America… or Musharraf mumbles bull about Islamic law and waffles. We shall see.
I can tell you right now how this should go. We shouldn't worry about whether this will destabilize Pakistan. We shouldn't worry about this undermining our new friend. Musharraf is a big boy. He should take care of himself. And he should also face up to his own mistakes in not turning this guy over a long time ago.
It's time for Sheikh to visit the United States, ultimate destination Terre Haute, Indiana. What's good for McVeigh will be plenty good for him… pending a fair trial, of course.
That's My Word.
