Well, the whole world is watching how America is dealing with the terror.
Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld says that the United States will not cease bombing once the Muslim holy month of Ramadan begins on November 16. Mr. Rumsfeld believes that sustained action may be necessary. And if it is, I support it.
But if we can stop the bombing in Afghanistan during Ramadan without endangering our mission to overthrow the Taliban and wipe out the terrorists, I would do it. I would send a signal to the Muslim world that we respect their religion.
Just about every military analyst I've talked with believes the Taliban would already be out if not for Pakistan and political considerations. We are waiting to install a coalition (audio interrupt) in Afghanistan that Pakistan will approve.
But Talking Points believes that enough time has passed, and the Northern Alliance, along with allied Special Forces, should take Kabul as soon as possible, so we will have the option not to bomb during Ramadan. The situation in Afghanistan is a short-term one. The bigger picture is much more insecure.
Americans now know that none of us are safe. There are no rules any more, and other nations should realize that as well. For the first time in history, the four most powerful countries on this earth -- the U.S., Britain, China, and Russia -- actually agree on something. The Muslim terrorists cannot be tolerated any more.
President Bush needs to build on that. If these four countries band together to punish any nation that harbors terrorists, no nation will. And the terrorists will have no place to hide.
Think about that for a moment. If Russia, China, America, and Britain declare zero tolerance for terrorism, and share intelligence and economic strategies, no country could withstand that kind of power, including Iraq and Iran.
Mr. Bush would have to make economic concessions to China and Russia, but it would be worth it. The war on terror cannot be won by us alone. And isolating terror-friendly nations is the way to go.
The world is a very small place when the four most powerful nations are hunting you, and without trade, any country will fall. If President Bush can get this anti-terror strategy in place, the world will owe him a great debt. That is the final solution to terrorism. Talking Points hopes it is motion.
And that's the memo.
Most Ridiculous Item of the Day
It is probably good for most Americans that I can't make too many personal appearances. Just don't have the time to do it.
Judging from some of my mail, I should be hiding in the basement. But on Friday, Oct. 26, I'll be in Dallas, Texas, speaking to the National Center for Policy Analysis, and that event is open to the public, so I wanted to tell you about it in case you're down there.
You can get information at www.ncpa.org,
Now, I used to live in Dallas, so I'm giving everybody fair warning down there, I'm coming back to town, y'all. I don't want to hear any wise comments.
