Mail sent to the theater where the Emmy Awards will be staged and to the television academy will be redirected beginning Tuesday as a precaution.
"We're diverting mail to another location to be sorted and examined," said Bryce Zabel, chairman of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
The move is in response to the anthrax-contaminated letters sent to Congress and news media companies. No suspicious mail has been received by the academy, said Jim Chabin, academy president.
The awards ceremony is scheduled for Nov. 4 at the Shubert Theatre in Los Angeles. The show was postponed because of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and again after the U.S.-led military strikes began in Afghanistan.
Representatives from the city fire and police departments, the FBI and the Federal Aviation Administration are working with the academy on what it has called unprecedented security measures.
"By now, our message has gone out clearly to all who might attend that we've taken security very seriously," Zabel said.
