Robert Redford, Johnny Depp and Drew Barrymore at the movies this weekend in the bright marquee glare of The Foxlight.
Redford is back in prison but he's Brubaker on the other side of the bars. This is The Last Castle and in another switch, Tony Soprano is running the place. But surprise — he's crooked. The Sundance elder Kid is a wrongly sentenced General who rallies his new troops against the Warden. "Attica! Attica!" They want better bearnaise sauce in commissary. Critics are as divided and Gandolfini and Redford. Some call it compelling drama, others far fetched hooey.
Next, did you know Jack The Ripper signed his work? The notes next to his victims said "From Hell." Sounded like a movie to The Hughes Brothers, the guys behind — appropriately enough — Menace II Society. Johnny Depp thinks he knows Jack, and is using Heather Graham as the bait. No one seems to be ripping this one in the reviews. Most agree Depp is great — but this is grim material. On the other hand, Training Day has been No. 1 for the past two weeks.
Finally, Drew Barrymore is Riding in Cars With Boys. One of them is the always terrific Steve Zahn. But who did his hair? And Drew seems to be de-glamming for this one too — a true story about a bad girl gone good. With Penny Marshall behind the camera expect everyone to speak anything but softly and carry a big shtick.
