I recently received this e-mail from a very angry Mr. Bradley:
"Where the hell do you get off rah-rahing this country and talking tough? You said yourself you never served. And you clearly don't know the meaning of hardship. I wish my life was as soft and easy as yours. Do you know what adversity is, you pathetic shill?"
Mr. Bradley, I know a little bit about adversity and a lot about pain. I deal with things you might not appreciate or fathom.
But that's not my point here. Addressing your unique sense of patriotism is.
I've said it before, so I'll say it again: You don't have to be a veteran to appreciate those who are. And you don't have to march in the parade to appreciate those who do.
Sometimes the best way of telling our heroes we're with you, is to start by simply saying "thank you." That's not a leap for me, that's an honor for me. It doesn't kill me to say it. But nowhere in the litany of your attacks, Mr. Bradley, do you bother to even mention it.
You call me a soft, pathetic shill. Well, I'd much rather have a thick middle than a thick skull — although some of you claim I have both.
One more thing, Mr. Bradley. I'm sure if you were to walk a mile in anyone's shoes in this country, you would learn a lot. That you don't have to be patton to have a patent on toughness. That you don't have the market cornered on pain or suffering. It comes in many forms, in many ages, in many ways and with many people.
If we've learned nothing more than that from September 11, that's good enough for me. It's a pity it's not good enough for you.
You remind me of the guy who wins a million bucks and complains about the color of the money. You are a whiner and a moaner. You say I sicken you? Well, you sicken me.
You say you don't enjoy watching me. A one word suggestion: don't. There are other networks, other hosts, who'd love to have you.
May I suggest you go find them.
