General George A. Joulwan

Currently, the president of a strategic consulting firm called One Team, Inc., General George A. Joulwan was Supreme Allied Commander, Europe and Commander in Chief, United States European Command from 1993-1997.

He has served 36 years in active commissioned service.  He was the first SACEUR commander to command at every level in the alliance from platoon to brigade to Supreme Commander. 

He also was commander in chief of the U.S. Southern Command in Panama from 1990-1993 and commanding general of the V Corps of the U.S. Army Europe and Seventh Army in Germany between 1989-1990.

From 1988-1989, he was commanding general of the Third Armored Division of the U.S. Army in Europe and Seventh Army in Germany.  Prior to that he served two years as deputy chief of staff for operations in the Third Armored Division.

Joulwan was executive to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1982-1985 and director of force requirements for the deputy chief of staff for operations and plans in the US. Army.  He was director of the political and economical studies at the United States Army War College between 1978-1979.  Joulwan was special assistant to the Supreme Allied Commander, Europe from 1974-1975 and served as special assistant to the president from 1973 to 1974.

Joulwan has earned many medals and badges, including a Defense Distinguished Service Medal, a Distinguished Service Medal, a Silver Star, a Legion of Merit, a Bronze Star, a Meritorious Service Medal and an Army Commendation Medal.

Joulwan is an adjunct professor at the National Defense University and serves on the Army Science Board, the Secretary of Defense Globalization panel, and the Quadrennial Defense Review Panel among others.  He is on the board of trustees for the United States Military Academy.

Joulwan earned a bachelor's degree from the U.S. Military Academy and an M.A. in political science from Loyola University.  He also attended the U.S. Army War College, the Infantry School, the Armor School, and the United States Army Command and General Staff College.

Joulwan was born in November 1939 in Pottsville, PA.  He is married to Karen E. Jones.  They have three adult daughters.
