Some new developments in the Condit-Levy case.  They are new developments.

It is now just a matter of time before Congressman Condit resigns, in my opinion.  There's no question he has lost all credibility.  And, remember, it is we Americans who pay his salary, not just the people of Modesto, California.  Condit and all congresspeople must answer to all the American people.

The final stake through Condit's heart came today when D.C. Police Chief Charles Ramsey pretty much called Condit a liar for saying he has cooperated with authorities.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

CHIEF CHARLES RAMSEY, D.C. METROPOLITAN POLICE:  We said all the time we didn't think he was forthcoming in all those interviews.  We -- again, I think that, if you watched the interview last week, you got a pretty good flavor for what I'm talking about, and he answered all the questions, but you decide whether or not you think that was helpful or not.

O'REILLY:  Also, some members of Condit's staff are angry because they now have to hire lawyers to explain why they denied Condit's affair with Ms. Levy.  Condit's lawyer, Abbe Lowell, says nobody told them to do that.

All this is interesting but ultimately doesn't really matter much.  Condit is through.  It is only his unbelievable selfishness that's keeping him from resigning.

The problem with that stance is that it erodes public confidence in our elected officials.  Bill Clinton ran the public through the ringer with his perjury, and various other big-name politicians have embarrassed themselves with all kinds of scandals, ranging from Bob Packwood to Dan Rostenkowski.

So what we have here is a government that is becoming a joke.  Public perception of elected officials is terrible.  I mean, we have the mayor of Waterbury, Connecticut, who won't resign even though he's been indicted on charges of child molestation.  Things are completely out of control.

Now many of us are cynical about our government, but this is serious stuff.  The rest of the world thinks the United States of America is corrupt, and they may be partially right.  We had a president who perjured himself, we had an attorney general who wouldn't investigate possible high crimes, and now we have Gary Condit.  It's a deplorable situation.

And that's the memo.

Most Ridiculous Item of the Day

Time now for the "Most Ridiculous Item of the Day."  Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in, one of the great lines from the "Godfather" movies.  And I'm coming to you tonight from Boston because I'm supposed to be on the island of Nantucket having fun, not that this isn't fun.  The Factor is always a blast.

But every time I go on vacation something like the Soltys capture happens, every time.  And it is ridiculous.
