Sean "Puffy" Combs wore his sunglasses to court yesterday, setting off a fashion fracas between his lawyer and a Manhattan prosecutor.

Dressed all in denim, with his trademark dark-tinted, wire-framed shades poised on his nose, the millionaire rap mogul arrived five minutes late to Manhattan Supreme Court where the courtrooms and attitudes are rarely sunny.

Combs was in court to set a date for trial on gun possession and bribery charges stemming from a December shoot 'em-up at a Midtown nightclub.

The trial was set for Jan. 2 but meanwhile, Combs got a dressing down for his shady eyewear.

"Defendant Combs has now the last three times been late," lead prosecutor Matthew Bogdanos complained to Justice Charles Solomon, who will preside at the trial.

Bogdanos urged Solomon to throw Combs in jail if it happened again, adding, "And that's besides the fact that he refuses to take his sunglasses off when he comes into court."

Solomon declined to take action and changed the subject.

But Combs' lawyer, Benjamin Brafman a sharp dresser who has clashed repeatedly with Bogdanos jibed back, "I won't comment on Mr. Bogdanos' ties."

Combs faces up to 15 years in prison on charges he fled the scene of the Club New York shooting in a speeding Lincoln Navigator carrying two loaded, unregistered guns.

His bodyguard, Anthony "Wolf" Jones, and protégé rapper Jamal "Shyne" Barrow the accused shooter will be tried with him.

The trial is expected to take several weeks, and will feature testimony by Combs' superstar girlfriend, Jennifer Lopez.
