WASHINGTON —  The wife of New Hampshire Sen. Judd Gregg (search) was abducted at knifepoint Tuesday from the couple's suburban home and forced to withdraw money from a local bank, police said. She was released unharmed.

Kathleen Gregg, 52, said she found two men inside her McLean, Va., home when she arrived about 9:30 a.m. EDT. One pulled a knife and demanded money, said Jacqi Smith, a spokeswoman for the Fairfax County Police Department.

Mrs. Gregg then was told to drive to a local Wachovia Bank (search) branch and withdraw money, police said. After receiving the cash, the men fled in a silver Chevrolet Monte Carlo (search) with Virginia license plates.

Mrs. Gregg was not harmed, but "her life was threatened and it was a terrifying experience," said a statement from Gregg's Senate office.

Sgt. Jeff Gossett of the Fairfax County Police said tellers at the bank were not aware of any problem as Mrs. Gregg asked to withdraw money from her account.

"Yes, she's fine," said Mrs. Gregg's mother-in-law, Catherine Gregg, in Nashua, N.H. "It took a lot of courage, a lot of courage for what she went through."

Police said there was no indication the robbers knew who Mrs. Gregg was.

A similar robbery occurred in the county last week, but police do not know if the two are connected, Gossett said. It's "very bold, it's very brazen," he said.

Agents from the FBI's Washington field office were assisting Fairfax County police.
