Report: Russia Gives Cautious Support to Iraq Resolution

MOSCOW —  Russia is giving cautious support to a U.S.-drafted resolution handing the United Nations (searcha greater role in Iraq, Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov (searchsaid Friday, the Interfax news agency reported.

The statement was a further sign that Moscow was edging closer to Washington than to France and Germany -- which it joined in opposing the war -- as the U.N. Security Council (searchdebates what role it should play in Iraq's future. On Thursday, defense minister Sergei Ivanov said Russia may send peacekeepers to Iraq as part of an international force.

"Preliminarily speaking, I can say that this initiative deserves attention since the content of the proposed resolution reflects those principles which Russia has consistently championed," Ivanov told reporters on a trip to Uzbekistan.

The statement came one day after the Russian Defense Minister said that Mocow might send peacekeepers to Iraq as part of an international force.

Ivanov said that Moscow was attentively studying the U.S.-proposed draft resolution that envisages broader U.N. role in governing Iraq and providing security.
