‘Sexed Up’ Claims Knocked Down

As the official inquiry continues into whether British Prime Minister Tony Blair (search), "sexed up" pre-war intelligence on Iraq by saying Saddam Hussein (search) could launch weapons of mass destruction at 45 minutes' notice, a top British intelligence officer is now backing up Blair's claim, telling parliament the claim was justified and that, "nobody was in a better position to know that [than I]." John Scarlett, the head of the British joint intelligence committee, says media reports implying the British government exaggerated pre-war intelligence are, "completely untrue."

Moveon's Next Move

Moveon.org…the Internet-based political group that crusaded against President Clinton's (search) impeachment and has helped turn outsider Howard Dean (search) into a leading candidate for the democratic presidential nomination in 2004…is now launching a new campaign…complete with TV ads…attacking Republicans in Texas. One month after democratic legislators fled Texas to stop a redistricting bill, moveon.org is now asking for $1 million in donations to, "show [Republican] Texas Governor Rick Perry (search) ... that there are political consequences for doing [House Majority Leader] Tom DeLay's (search) Congressional dirty work in Texas." Thing is, moveon.org says it cannot guarantee that any donations will be used for their intended purposes.

California Roughly Same Size As Iraq

Two hundred and seventy seven U.S. soldiers have now died in Iraq, which means that, statistically speaking, U.S. soldiers have less of a chance of dying from all causes in Iraq than citizens have of being murdered in California…which is roughly the same geographical size. The most recent statistics indicate California has more than 2,300 homicides each year, which means about 6.6 murders each day. Meanwhile, U.S. troops have been in Iraq for 160 days, which means they are incurring about 1.7, including illness and accidents, each day.

Commandments No Stranger To Government Buildings

While a federal judge has ordered Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore (search) to remove the Ten Commandments (search) in the state judicial building, there are numerous depictions of Moses and the Ten Commandments in government buildings all over Washington. Including: inside the Supreme Court, they are inside the Capitol building subway, they are inside the Department of Justice…and inside the National Archives and the Library of Congress. But these places are now getting touchy about letting visitors photograph these images. The Library of Congress, at first granted, then revoked its permission, citing regulation 1210-1, section 4, part D, which permits photography only for stories about the Library itself.
