U.S. Soldier Killed in Western Baghdad

BAGHDAD, Iraq  —  A U.S. soldier was shot and killed in western Baghdad (search), the military reported Friday, the third American soldier reported slain in the capital in the past two days.

The military said the soldier was attacked Thursday night in the upscale al-Mansour (search) neighborhood.

Since U.S. President George W. Bush announced an end to major combat in Iraq on May 1, 56 soldiers have died in combat. The total combat casualties in the war has climbed to 170, 23 more than in the Gulf War (search).

The military gave no details on the latest soldier's death and withheld his name until relatives were notified.
