U.S. Soldier From Peacekeeping Unit Dies in Kuwait

DOHA, Qatar  —  A soldier from the Army's 1st Armored Division (searchdied of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound in Kuwait early Monday, U.S. Central Command said.

Central Command (search) said the incident was under investigation.

The soldier was part of the lead elements of the 1st Armored Division, which over the next two weeks will be deploying to the region from its base in Wiesbaden, Germany (search). The unit is the Army's most experienced peacekeeping unit, and is expected to begin taking up positions in Iraq as a stabilizing force.

The soldier's name was being withheld pending next-of-kin notification.
