BAGHDAD, Iraq  —  A U.S. soldier drowned Thursday when a tank plunged into a canal west of Baghdad (search), the U.S. military said.

The tank, from the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment (search), drove into a berm, an artificial sand barrier, and then dropped into the canal near the town of Fallujah (search), about 30 miles outside the capital, according to a briefing at the Army's V Corps headquarters.

Efforts to resuscitate the soldier failed. The soldier was not identified pending notification of next of kin.

In another incident reported by V Corps, a U.S. soldier was slightly wounded by shrapnel in the east-central part of Baghdad Thursday when a U.S. patrol exchanged fire with unidentified gunmen.
