U.S. Troops Exchange Fire With Iraqi Forces at Airport

Sunday, April 06, 2003

NEAR BAGHDAD, Iraq —  U.S. soldiers in the 101st Airborne Division exchanged fire Sunday with Iraqi forces at Baghdad's airport. No U.S. forces were hurt, but two Iraqis were killed.

The attack began when up to a dozen people came running out of buildings near the 13-square-mile facility's perimeter and approached two companies of troops.

U.S forces brought in air support to relieve one company and an artillery barrage for the second.

U.S. forces seized Saddam International Airport after an all-night tank and infantry assault last week and have been searching the tunnels underneath for any Iraqi soldiers who might be hiding out.

Above ground, they have been taking sporadic fire from isolated remnants of the Iraqi leader's special Republican Guard.
