One Soldier Dead, Several Injured or Missing After Possible Friendly Fire Incident

Thursday, April 03, 2003

CAMP AS SAYLIYAH, Qatar —  One U.S. soldier was killed and several others were missing or injured in a possible friendly fire incident involving an F-15E fighter jet, the U.S. Central Command said.

A statement from Central Command said only that the incident involved a F-15E Strike Eagle and coalition ground forces. It did not give any other details.

"One U.S. Army soldier is dead and several others are reported injured or missing in connection with the incident," the statement said.

Since the war began March 20, friendly fire is believed to have caused at least five of 27 British deaths, including the destruction of a Royal Air Force aircraft by a U.S. Patriot missile battery.

Dozens of U.S. troops have been injured by their own forces.
