Poll: Should Guns Be Banned in the Cockpit?

Tuesday, May 21, 2002

On Tuesday, the federal government announced that pilots will not be allowed to have guns in the cockpits of commercial U.S. airplanes.

In the months following the Sept. 11 attacks, government officials, airline executives and pilots groups debated the topic. Some airlines had said they would allow their pilots to carry weapons, while other carriers opposed the plan.

Both Transportation Secretary Norman Y. Mineta and Homeland Security Director Tom Ridge previously indicated their opposition to arming pilots.

What do you think?
