550-Pound Woman Gives Birth to Healthy Baby

Doctors in Moscow gave themselves a pat on the back after delivering a healthy baby from a morbidly obese woman whose weight would normally preclude conception, the Australian Associated Press reports.

The birth was overseen by Moscow's chief gynecologist due to the 550-pound weight of the 34-year-old first-time mom identified only as Nonna M.

The woman gave birth to a healthy boy weighing a modest 4.4 pounds after a 5-hour labor that was artificially induced by doctors.

"It's really a striking case," Irina Osadcheva, the deputy head of Moscow's Maternity Clinic Number 8, where the birth took place, told the Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper.
